How to Keep the Cavity Monster Away this Halloween

Watching your kids dress up in cute, spooky costumes and go out trick-or-treating can be a real thrill. But thinking about the dental damage caused by eating all those sweets might just give you the chills. So is it best to act like a witch and take away all the candy from those adorable little ghosts and goblins?

Relax! According to experts like the American Dental Association, it’s OK to let kids enjoy some sweet treats on special occasions like Halloween—especially if they have been taking good care of their oral hygiene all year long, by brushing twice each day and flossing once every day. But to help keep cavities away from those young smiles, there are some things parents (and everyone else) should understand.

Cavities—small holes in the tooth’s outer surface that result from the decay process—get started when bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar and produce acids. The acids eat away at the hard enamel coating of teeth. If left untreated, decay will eventually reach the soft inner core of the tooth, causing even more serious damage.

There are several ways to stop the process of tooth decay. One is to take away the sugar that decay bacteria feed on. Because this ingredient is common in so many foods, it’s hard to completely eliminate sugar from the diet. Instead, it may be more practical to limit the consumption of sweets. For example, if kids are only allowed to eat sugary treats around mealtimes, it gives the mouth plenty of “downtime,” in which healthful saliva can neutralize the bacterial acids. It also helps to avoid sweets that stick to teeth (like taffy or gummy bears) and those that stay in the mouth for a long time (like hard candy).

Another way to help stop tooth decay is by maintaining top-notch oral hygiene. Decay bacteria thrive in the sticky film called plaque that clings stubbornly to the surfaces of teeth. Plaque can be removed by—you guessed it—effective brushing and flossing techniques. While it’s a good start, brushing alone won’t remove plaque from the spaces between teeth and under the gums: That’s why flossing is an essential part of the daily oral hygiene routine. Helping your kids develop good oral hygiene habits is among the best things you can do to fight cavities.

And speaking of habits, there are a few others that can help—or hurt—your oral health. For example, drinking plenty of water keeps the body hydrated and benefits oral health; but regularly drinking soda and other sweetened or acidic beverages greatly increases the risk of tooth decay. And seeing your dentist on a regular basis for professional cleanings and routine checkups is one of the most beneficial habits of all. Moderate Your Child's Juice Drinking to Lower Tooth Decay Risk

Along with daily brushing and flossing, limiting your child’s sugar consumption is an important way to prevent tooth decay. We all know the usual suspects: candy, sugar-added snacks and sodas. But there’s one category you may not at first think fits the profile—juices. But even natural juices with no added sugar can raise your child’s risk of tooth decay if they’re drinking too much.

Tooth decay is caused by certain strains of bacteria in the mouth, which produce acid. Sugar in any form (sucrose, fructose, maltose, etc.) is a primary food source for these bacteria. When there’s a ready food source, bacteria consume it and produce abnormally high levels of acid. This can cause the mineral content of tooth enamel to dissolve faster than saliva, which neutralizes acid, can reverse the tide.

Juices without added sugar still contain the natural sugar of the fruit from which they originate. The American Academy of Pediatrics conducted a study of the effect of these natural juice sugars on dental health. Their conclusion: it can have an effect, so the amount of juice consumed daily by a child should be restricted according to age.

They’ve since published guidelines to that effect:

  • Under age 1 (or any child with abnormal weight gain): no juice at all;
  • Ages 1-3: no more than 4 ounces a day;
  • Ages 4-6: no more than 6 ounces a day;
  • Ages 7-18: no more than 8 ounces (1 cup) a day.

Again, these are guidelines—you should also discuss the right limits for your individual child with your dentist or pediatrician. And if you’re wondering what kind of beverages pose less risk of tooth decay, you can look to low or non-fat milk. And, of course, don’t forget water—besides containing no sugar, nature’s hydrator has a neutral pH, so it won’t increase acidity in the mouth.

Tooth decay is one of the biggest health problems many kids face. But with good teeth-friendly habits, including restricting sugar intake in any of its many forms (including juices) you can go a long way in reducing their risk of this destructive disease.

Healthy Bone and Gums Essential for Successful Implant Results

Dental implants have revolutionized tooth replacement in many ways. But perhaps their most powerful impact is for restoring the most visible teeth when we smile: those in the “smile zone.”

For the best results, though, we must look beyond the implant itself to the bone and gums that will ultimately support it. If these tissues aren’t healthy, we’ll have little chance for a natural and life-like smile.

Bone is a living tissue with a life cycle. As older bone cells die and dissolve, newer cells form to take their place with the forces generated by the teeth when we chew stimulating this new growth. But this stimulus ceases when a tooth is lost, which can lead to a slowing in the cell replacement rate. Eventually, the bone volume can decrease to the point where it’s difficult to properly place an implant for best results.

We can, however, help regenerate new bone through grafting. A graft of bone material placed in the empty tooth socket becomes a scaffold for new bone to grow on and increase the volume enough for successful implantation. While we can still perform bone grafting years after tooth loss, it’s better to do it immediately after tooth extraction so as to maintain adequate bone for a future implant.

The gums also play a major role in tooth stability and protection, not to mention appearance. Unfortunately, periodontal (gum) disease, which often precipitates tooth loss, can severely damage these tissues. As the disease weakens their attachment to teeth, the gums can gradually shrink back or recede. Receded gums could ruin the life-like appearance of an implant, especially in the Smile Zone.

Again, tissue grafting can be the answer. Similar to a bone graft, the soft tissue graft in this case (often from the patient themselves) is attached to the recession site to support new tissue growth and development. The techniques used are a form of microsurgery requiring specialized equipment and training; even so, gum grafting can change the game for implant attractiveness and better oral health.

What does November make you think of? Pumpkins? Turkeys? Dry leaves and frosty mornings? How about cigarette butts?
